When she said goodbye to Edward before the Promised Day, Winry fully expected him to return. He'd always come back before, and he'd come back again. When only Alphonse came back from that fight, she believed him when he said his brother was safe, and would be coming back. When Ed finally returned, she believed they'd share a fairytale "happily ever after" in her family home in Resembool.

When his boyfriend arrived, she no longer knew what to think.

Shocked to learn he regarded her as a sister, and that he'd fallen for another, Winry was angry--at first, anyway. With time, she began to accept that the two were truly in love, and was able to let go and learn to love him as a brother. As she moved on from him, she also began to notice the young foreign doctor who'd come to Rush Valley to learn about Amestris's automail technology, and to realize that he'd already developed an interest in her.

While Esa carries great potential as a mage, her lack of interest in the pursuit of magic left her a disappointing student and a borderline washout. Her failures in her studies put her at risk of heavy punishments from the Council; during her final evaluation after yet another failure, Gabriel stepped in to give her one final chance, as his own student. Under his patient training, she finally began to properly pursue her studies, and ultimately become recognized as a full mage. Toward the end of her tutelage, she began to fall for her teacher, eventually marrying and having children with him.
